One of the largest and most expansive rooftops in Washington, DC for safe outdoor dining, drinking and socializing, Hi-Lawn has just launched several exciting post-pandemic offerings, making it DC’s ultimate hot-weather destination this season. The panoramic astroturf-covered green space is now open seven days a week, with live music, giant lawn games, weekly theme nights, and new summer food and drink menus.

Located on the roof of Union Market, the sprawling space (with a capacity of 1,040) is the perfect place to stretch out, have a picnic and take in the views, equipped with picnic tables and colorful umbrellas, designated picnic spaces on artificial turf, neon-hued patio furniture and a wooden deck with a cleverly designed shipping container bar that dispenses cocktails on tap, spiked seltzer, can and bucket craft beers, and affordable, well-preserved wines.

Hi-Lawn embraces the picnic and barbecue season, offering dishes ideal for outdoor group gatherings.

Picnic snacks abound, such as homemade onion dip and fries; a mezze platter of dips + dips such as whipped feta, hummus, pita, marinated carrots, roasted olives and crispy cucumber; a Charcuterie Plate + Aged country ham cheese, aged cheddar, nuts, jam, pickles and crackers; and an arugula salad in a mai tai vinaigrette with avocado, goat cheese, berries and toasted almonds.

Guests can escape to the shore without leaving DC, with seaside bites like the Brown Butter Mayo Lobster Roll topped with shrimp, as well as celery root, lime, and scallions in a split roll; Fried clam strips with yum yum and lemon sauce; and Grilled Mahi Sandwich with Avocado, Celeriac Salad and Chipotle Lime Aioli on a Martin’s Potato Roll.

Hi-Lawn also offers mouth-watering snacks and sandwiches like mozzarella sticks with a spicy tomato sauce; Curly fries drizzled with togarashi ranch; a turkey club stacked with roast turkey, crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles and black pepper mayonnaise on buttermilk toast; and local beef and meatless burgers hot on the grill.

BHG Beverage Director Ian Fletcher has launched a selection of creative cocktails designed to refresh guests in the rooftop transport. Summer cocktails include Cool Rummings (Hamilton Navy Strength Rum, Cardamaro Pineapple, Passionfruit, Cranberry, Lemon); Mourning After Seacrets (Deep Eddy Lime Vodka, Giffard Peach Liqueur, Passionfruit, Grenadine, Prosecco); Coconut cream (orange, lemon, vanilla, coconut cream, coconut milk); Mezcal Margarita (Union Mezcal, lime, triple sec, agave, grapefruit); and Silver Lining (Old Overholt Rye, Green Tea, Peach, Lemon, Honey).

Hi-Lawn also offers craft beer and soda can and bucket, as well as wine by the glass / bottle and zero-proof seasonal options for non-drinkers. All food and drink orders and payments are contactless, via a QR code through GoTab.

Hi-Lawn has just launched a series of weekly theme nights, including live music Thursdays and Get Nauti Mondays!

Every Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., local musicians perform live on the lawn, with programming ranging from funk and soulful grooves of Jarreau Williams to energetic cover band The Perfectionists, to retro hits of Cathy D Music. Local concerts are free, but reservations are recommended.

And every Monday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Hi-Lawn hosts a nautical-themed deck party with seaside specialties (freshly shucked oysters, fried clam strips and lobster rolls), as well as discounted champagne (in bottle, magnum and half-bottle format) and beer buckets.

In mid-July, Hi-Lawn will launch Games We Play Tuesdays with common lawn games, such as giant chess, Jenga, cornhole and more, as well as themed specials for the night.

Hi-Lawn is open 7 days a week, Monday to Thursday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday to Saturday from 12 p.m. to 12 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Hi-Lawn takes both reservations through Resy and without an appointment.
