A low magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported around noon near Faizabad, Faīẕābād, Badakhshan, Afghanistan.
According to the Indian National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck on Sunday, June 27, 2021 at 1:08 p.m. local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deep ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many as a slight vibration in the epicenter area.
Weak tremors could have been felt in Chubek (19,600 inhabitants) located 37 km from the epicenter, Rustāq (25,600 inhabitants) at 42 km, Hulbuk (21,700 inhabitants) at 55 km, Kŭlob (78,800 inhabitants) at 57 km, Faizabad (44,400 inhabitants) 58 km, Ārt Khwājah (18,600 inhabitants) 67 km and Taloqan (64,300 inhabitants) 93 km.
