(CBS DETROIT) – ACCORDING TO MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, DURING THE PANDEMIC THOSE SEEKING MENTAL HEALTH HELP HAS INCREASED BY 300% AND THIS NUMBER IS ONLY EXPECTED TO GROW DURING THE HOLIDAYS.

“OUR DOORS HAVE BEEN CLOSED EVERY DAY WITH MORE PEOPLE SEEKING HELP OFTEN WE HAVE THE CAPACITY TO SERVE. »SAID MICHAEL GARRETT, PRESIDENT, CEO OF CNS HEALTHCARE

YET; GARRETT WITH CNS HEALTHCARE, AN ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES A VARIETY OF MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES IN SOUTH-EAST MICHIGAN, SAID THEY WILL NOT REFUSE ANYONE, NOT DURING THIS VERY CRITICAL PERIOD WHERE THEY SEE A CRITICAL NEED.

“JUST AS HOSPITAL SYSTEMS IN 2020 WERE OVERLOADED, THE MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM AT THIS TIME IS IN FULL OPERATION,” GARRETT SAID

GARRETT SAYS PEOPLE SUFFER FROM STRESS, DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY MAINLY BECAUSE OF BEING ISOLATED DURING THE PANDEMIC. THERE IS ALSO A LOSS OF JOB, AND NOT BEING ABLE TO RAN CORRECTLY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOST RELATIVES DURING THIS PERIOD.

HE SAYS FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY SUFFERED FROM MENTAL HEALTH BEFORE, THE COVID AND THE PANDEMIC HAVE NOT ADDED FUEL, AND THEY GENERALLY SEE AN INCREASE DURING THE HOLIDAYS, ESPECIALLY WITH THE OLDER POPULATION.

“SENIORS ARE PARTICULARLY SENSITIVE TO ISOLATION AND DEPRESSION,” GARRETT SAID.

HE SAYS IT IS ESSENTIAL TO RECEIVE HELP IF YOU NEED IT, HOWEVER MOST PEOPLE MAY NOT REALIZE THEY NEED IT.

“I START THOUGHT OF SUICIDAL THOUGHTS AT THE TIME AND HAD TROUBLE WITH DEPRESSION MOST OF MY ADULT LIFE,” SAID MALAIA NEWMAN, ANTI-STIGMA TEAM SUPERVISOR

NEWMAN WHO WORKS IN THE ANTI-STIGMA PROGRAM AT CNS SAYS SHE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER UNTIL THE END OF 40, ALTHOUGH SHE HAS EXPERIENCED SYMPTMS AND DEPRESSION SINCE AGE 16.

NEWMAN SAYS SHE DIDN’T UNDERSTAND HER EXTREME EMOTIONAL HIGHS AND LOWS, BUT IS GRATEFUL FOR RECEIVING THE HELP SHE NEEDED AND NOW TELLS HER STORY IN HOPE TO HELP OTHERS.

“JUST LIKE DIABETES, JUST LIKE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, YOU MANAGE IT, YOU TAKE YOUR MEDICATION AND YOU CAN HAVE A VERY SUCCESSFUL LIFE,” NEWMAN SAID.
