Residents of Crestview Towers with 15 minutes to collect their belongings face uncertainty

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Florida – Nori Morales had 15 minutes. She had accumulated clothes and furniture during the two years she had lived in the 152 Crestview Towers units. The time she was allowed into the doomed 10-story building on Friday in North Miami Beach was simply not enough.

Morales works as a nail technician. She had struggled during the coronavirus pandemic, but business had resumed with the COVID vaccine. Being homeless was not in his plans. Once at the door, she ran inside her apartment to get her much-needed supplies for the job.

She must have left the rest behind.

“I live in hell, honestly,” Morales said.

Morales and about 300 others were forced to evacuate on July 2 after the city condemned the building to 2025 NE 164th St. on a Jan. 11 report from an engineer who deemed it unsafe.

The only way for residents of Crestview Towers to get home is for the condominium association to submit a new 40-year recertification report that addresses all structural and electrical issues, officials said.

Darwin Reyes, who had lived at Crestview Towers for five years, said Friday’s experience was a nightmare. To get back, he needed an escort standing there loudly shouting a countdown. The uncertainty of not knowing when officials will allow them to return home permanently is what Yanosh Serebryaanik finds most stressful.

North Miami Beach city manager Arthur H. Sorey III said residents were not safe in the building. North Miami Beach Police Department Chief Richard Rand said an investigation was underway into the alleged embezzlement of the Crestview Towers Condominium Association.

City officials have rejected two new inquiries filed by the condominium association this week because they did not comply with the certification process or address issues raised in the January report. Crestview also has nearly $ 500,000 in unpaid fines for code violations dating back to 2014.
